Family History
Richard Steel & Partners
are independent family owned funeral directors and is the
result of Richard and Iain Steel's desire to focus on continuing
four generations of vocation and service to the local community.
The family's link with
Winchester was established in 1874 with John Steel who was
then joined by Stanley, his nephew in 1921. Stanley served
on Winchester City Council for over 25 years, twice having
the honour of being elected Mayor of Winchester, and our
premises in City Road have been named Alderman House in
his memory. Richard Steel joined his father in 1962. A keen
sportsman and singer. He is Chairman of the Trustees of
St. Johns Winchester Charity, Chairman of the Winchester
Working Men's Housing Society, President of the Winchester
Operatic Society and St John Ambulance, and is a former
Trustee of the Theatre Royal. His son Iain became the fourth
generation in 1988. Iain is also a keen singer and actor;
he is a member of several local societies and has recently
won a Southern Daily Echo award. He is a member of the Board
of Examiners for the National Association of Funeral Directors.
Mark Allery joins Richard and Iain as a Director of Richard
Steel & Partners. Mark has worked with Richard and Iain
for the last few years as a qualified funeral director following
a senior management career in the retail sector.
